This is where the "bystander effect" comes into play: It's a social phenomenon in which individuals are less likely to try to help a victim of bullying when others are present. "It was first demonstrated by social psychologists John Darley and Bibb Latan├й in 1964," says Dr. Tim Lynch, a psychologist who studies how computer interaction affects personality. "They found that if there are many people witnessing an event, most will not help or call someone to aid another believing that some other observer will do that. We get paralyzed in crowds and feel that it is someone else's responsibility to respond."

But intervening does work; when bystanders step in, bullying stops within 10 seconds 57 percent of the time according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services anti-bullying website, Stopbullying.gov.

How does that work when we witness bullying online, when the abuse, intimidation and harassment take place virtually and not in the playground, in the schoolyard or on the street? Lynch admits that it's difficult to reduce the bystander effect in cyberbullying situations due to the very nature of computer and social media communication.

"We feel more insulated from other people because they are screen names," he says. "Plus, there is a perception of anonymity in texting, emailing and social media posting that makes cyberbullies bolder and bystanders even less likely to act. The nature of the medium acts as a deterrent to coming to another user's aid in cyberbullying cases but lends itself to others joining in on the cyberbullying in order to feel part of a group."

тАЬIf autonomous cars are successful, and there are less accidents, then there is going to be less need for insurance agents,тА?Lynch says.

Big companies could incorporate their own insurance in their own autonomous cars and handle that in-house. And if an autonomous car gets into an accident with another autonomous car, who are you going to sue?

тАЬThe AI proponents especially are saying itтАЩs like the industrial revolution, and itтАЩs not,тА?Lynch points out. тАЬItтАЩs not because industrial revolution was machines that didnтАЩt think. You still needed people to run them. You still needed assembly lines. It lessened the handcrafting that people were doing, the hard labor.

тАЬBut as the machines moved in, it still created jobs. The problem with AI is as it moves in, itтАЩs going to take over jobs and itтАЩs not going to create jobs.тА?/p>

Man vs. machine?

Self-driving cars would likely reduce accidents, Lynch says, but itтАЩs not a given. He brings up the man who died in 2016 using TeslaтАЩs Autopilot mode on his Model S, the first fatal crash involving a self-driving car.

тАЬThe AI in that Tesla car didnтАЩt know the difference between a semi and a bridge and decided that the semi was a bridge and it could drive under it,тА?Lynch says. тАЬThereтАЩs a concept in AI called perverse instantiation. That is, we give an AI a task like driving. It completes that task, but it completes it in a weird way that we humans would never even consider.тА?/p>

In that Tesla crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found no defects in TeslaтАЩs system.

Still, AI just doesnтАЩt have the socialization and people skills humans have, or the life experience to just simply know the difference between a semi and a bridge.

тАЬThe AI running the car doesnтАЩt have a moral compass,тА?Lynch explains. тАЬIt doesnтАЩt know right from wrong the way that we do. It just knows thereтАЩs a task, and the best logical way to accomplish that task. Sometimes it will accomplish that task in ways that will harm people or harm the environment or harm nature in ways that we humans would never even consider doing. So thatтАЩs a problem with artificial intelligence-driven cars.

I received my Ph.D. in Psychology of Computers and Intelligent Machines from Boston University. Shortly thereafter, Omni Magazine named me the first Robopsychologist or Computer Psychologist. I was then written up as a computer psychologist, or psychologist who studies how computer interaction effects personality and how to make computer interfaces more user friendly, in the Wall Street Journal, Psychology Today, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, the London Sunday Times, Computer World, and many other publications. As part of my Doctoral Dissertation on the Effects of Computer Use on Personality and Social Interaction Patterns, I created Artificial Intelligence Natural Language interviewing software which was the basis of programs used by NIH division of AIDS Research and the United Nations, among others. I was an editor for the first Journal of Psychology of Computers. I taught graduate level courses and have written numerous journal articles on Ethics in computer science, Psychology of computers and how interacting with computers and intelligent machines effects people.

If they are still using computers with the Windows XP operating system, they are at extreme risk for viruses, hacking and security breaches since XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and is no longer being patched. These machines should be replaced as they are probably too underpowered to run Windows 7 or 8.1 software should then be updated to take advantage of a true 64 bit operating system and the performance and speed it brings.
